Every matter is unique. This page outlines how our fee structures work so you know what to expect when you speak with our attorneys. The specifics of your situation, and the appropriate fee model, are always confirmed during your initial consultation.
Consultation Fee
Most matters begin with a 30-minute consultation at $325. During this meeting, we evaluate whether we can assist you, identify the legal issues, and determine the appropriate billing structure for your case.
No estimates or quotes are provided before the consultation, because fees can vary significantly based on the facts, urgency, and complexity of your matter.
If you would like us to review documents before the consultation, which may be necessary for us to give specific and accurate advice, we can provide an estimate for the additional fees associated with that document review before any work begins. This ensures transparency while allowing you to decide how you would like to proceed.
For Landlords: Hourly Representation
Our landlord clients hire us for Unlawful Detainers (evictions), real property disputes, and complex landlord-tenant litigation. These cases are billed by the hour, at competitive rates that reflect decades of experience in one of California’s most regulated legal environments.
How Hourly Representation Works
- Hourly Billing: All landlord matters are billed hourly.
- Retainer (Deposit): A retainer is requested when representation extends beyond the consultation or involves litigation.
- Monthly Detailed Invoices: You receive a clear, itemized statement each month showing the work performed.
- Unused Funds: Any unused retainer balance is returned at the conclusion of your matter.
This model allows you to stay in control of your case and your budget, with transparency at every step.
For Tenants: Contingency Representation
We represent residential tenants almost exclusively on a contingency basis, meaning:
No upfront fees.
No hourly billing.
No recovery, no attorney’s fee.
This applies to tenant cases involving:
- Habitability problems
• Wrongful eviction
• Housing discrimination
• Fair housing violations
• Retaliation
• Landlord harassment
• Tenant safety and landlord liability issues
• And most other tenant-side claims arising from unsafe or unlawful housing conditions
This structure ensures tenants can pursue justice without financial barriers.
Exceptions
In a small number of situations, typically commercial tenants or well-funded residential tenants, hourly representation may be appropriate. This is determined on a case-by-case basis during the consultation.
Why Pricing Varies
Legal matters differ widely in scope, urgency, and complexity. Factors that affect the cost of representation include:
- The type of dispute
- The number of parties involved
- The documents and evidence required
- Whether litigation is anticipated
- The level of attorney involvement needed
These variables cannot be assessed without a conversation. The consultation ensures every client receives pricing guidance that is accurate and tailored to their circumstances.
Our Commitment to Transparency
Regardless of the billing model:
- You will understand the billing structure before any work begins.
- You will receive clear, detailed communication throughout your matter.
- There are no hidden fees or surprise charges.
- Your attorney will always explain next steps and expected costs as your case progresses.
